TeamSpecWishlist on Steam

An update to TeamSpec has been released. The major changes include:

3D sound

  • Every sound in the world now goes through Steam Audio. With headphones, sounds are heard the way a head hears them, so you can tell front from back and left from right. If you use speakers, untick "Headphones (HRTF)" in the Sound settings and sounds are panned between them instead.
  • Walls between you and a sound muffle it based on what the wall is made of. Wood lets more through than concrete, and highs get cut more than lows.
  • Sound now gets around corners. Someone shooting around a doorway is heard from the doorway instead of muffled through solid rock. A closed door blocks that path, and an open one does not. Maps bake this when they are exported from the level editor.
  • The echo and reverb of the space you are in are traced from the walls around you: a cave rings, a small concrete room booms, and open ground stays dry. Tight spaces are capped so they keep their character without drowning out your own gun.
  • Ambience reacts to where you are standing. Walk into a cave and the waves and wind outside drop and get duller.
  • Three new options in the Sound settings:
    • Room Echo & Reverb: how much the room around you colors what you hear.
    • Wall Muffling: how much a wall between you and a sound muffles it. Lower it if you want to hear people through walls more easily.
    • Ambience Room Effect: how much the map's ambience changes as you go indoors.

New sounds

  • Bullets now make an impact sound on whatever they hit, with a different sound for each surface: concrete, metal (which rings), wood, dirt, sand, snow, water, carpet and the rest.
  • Sliding now scrapes along the surface you are sliding on.
  • Wall kicks scuff the wall.
  • With your head under water, the world above is muffled.
  • Rounds and projectiles splash when they hit water.
  • Maps have ambience: the waves, wind and caves of Darkcove, and the warehouses of Soul House. The braziers on Darkcove crackle.

Voice lines

  • Press X to call for healing. Your teammates see a speech bubble, and healing bots come to help.
  • Every character, players and bots alike, now calls out what is happening in the match on its own. Examples: pushing the cart alone, a teammate carrying a full load of souls, your god running low, the enemy in your base. Hurt bots call for healing.
  • A character's voice follows their build: the more Power they have, the deeper they sound.
  • The world gets quieter for a moment while someone is talking, so callouts are not lost under gunfire.

Performance

  • Noise suppression and voice encoding now run on their own thread instead of the main one. In push-to-talk mode they do nothing at all while you are not talking, so voice chat costs about nothing until you press the key.
  • The first building of each type no longer freezes the game for about 150 ms when it is deployed.
  • The kill feed no longer causes a small hitch on most kills.
  • The first muzzle flash of a match no longer hitches.
  • Switching to a weapon that hides part of your arm no longer hitches for every character that does it.
  • Loading Darkcove is about 2 seconds faster.
  • Each bot that joins costs about half as much as before, so a wave of bots joining is much smoother.

Credits

  • The Info window now includes the licenses for Steam Audio and the libraries it includes, Signalsmith Stretch, and godot-steam-audio.
